Detroit, My take.

So much misinformation, and things media avoids to mention.  It is indeed about race and many fundamental differences between white and black culture.  During WWII there was mass southern migration to the auto factories and cheap housing was built.  Black population was concentrated in Paradise Valley.  Tensions grew as mobility did with racism ingrained in official attitude.  After the horrible 1943 riots returning GI’s bought new housing in the expanding suburbs.  Detroit’s touted population loss has been more than offset by the growth of largely white suburbs geographically circling Wayne County, and also the suburbs west of Detroit in the county.   The disparity thus created continued with white housing flight and expansion of manufacturing retail and service jobs in the suburbs to Detroit’s loss.  While the unions continued to control larger but aging labor markets, the large manufacturers began to de-centralize and outsource.  Following the Camelot era of civil rights, help the poor programs and increasingly militant demands for social equality, Detroit explodes in 1967.  Coleman Young says go north of 8 mile.  The white money says we already are, it’s all yours.  Archer and Bing have been the only honest guys since.  Scandal after scandal, the churches and voters continue to elect thieves and charlatans preying on their own, no longer with honkey to blame.  Big companies that have sucked blood for decades are politically if not morally compelled to stay in the D more or less.  So out of 140 sq miles m/l, a great amount is vacant, crumbling, wasted or infected.  So what of all the people, business’s and companies that own or used to own all these lots, plats and acres?  Let me tell you…

 Those who could afford to go went.  Those that couldn’t stayed or still do.  Some became landlords and took what they could until they couldn’t.  Lack of education, opportunity and employment breeds crime, drugs, prostitution and gangs.  Neighborhoods change and the cost of maintenance, insurance and collections leads owners to let the bank take it back or forfeit it for taxes.   So there is a systematic failure when the banks, government and big companies own or control huge properties and tracts of land yet fail to remediate their use and development for their profits and indifference.  There is ample “Ruin Porn” for all to see.  But I drive all around the town  and tell you that the grand crumbling buildings means no more to most than a postcard of old Rome.  What is really there is more than a tragedy.  However,  Detroiters are some of the best people in the world, if you take the time to love yourself.  Detroit has amazing infrastructure with highways, railways, shipping and integration  that was and will yet be the worlds greatest.  The Detroit Forward project is a very good plan for renewal.  The big landowners need to be held accountable for letting the industrial behemoths deteriorate.  Government and banks even more so.  The emergency manager bankruptcy process will truly offer a new beginning to the D.  My family has been here many generations.  The rest of the state and especially the suburbs with their economic racism must grow up because we all came from there and cannot separate our past from our future.  It had better change or I’m afraid the riots are just beginning.
